When suggestions were first made that the Manufactory should extend its fraternity beyond the Guinea Pig race, the existing membership was less than enthusiastic! Sulks, moods and bottoms were the order of the day. It was only after reassurance that Hens were not particularly fond of salad that the mood lightened and the proposal was endorsed. Molly and Nellie were recruited after careful interviewing by Mavis. Part of her technique involved leaving the room halfway through the interview leaving large quantities of fresh grass and spinach in full view of the candidates. As Nellie and Molly resisted - they got the job! Supposedly ‘Point of Lay’ it took nearly six months before the first egg appeared on New Years Eve. This following numerous lectures, instructive classes, homework, graphic diagrams and finally thinly veiled threats. But it was well worth the wait! Molly and Nelly are truly free range, having full access to the garden and eating only the very choicest of nibbles - their favourites being sweetcorn and best Appleby Creepy Crawlies! The quality of the eggs is indescribable! The yolks are the richest, deepest yellow and taste absolutely wonderful. We use most of the eggs in the Manufactory Bakery, any spares being used in our Home Made Ice Cream. It is only when you have tasted how good home laid fresh eggs can be that you realise just how insipid and tasteless Supermarket ones actually are. They both have exceptionally strong personalities and have become inseparable best friends. No Manufactory should be without a pair!
