Piggyology can be roughly divided into three main departments: 1: All Piggies are born equal . . . . . but Mavis is a little bit more equal than the rest. 2: The Piggy and their food essentials. 3: The Piggy and their comfort essentials.
The first point is self explanatory - there seems little need to elaborate, that is just How It Is. If you need further clarification, Mavis will be only too happy to oblige!
Regarding the second issue - food. Over the generations the Mittens family have made it abundantly clear as to their individual food preferences - lots of it and then a bit more, just to be on the safe side. However, not every piggy is exactly the same and when you have the time to study individual piggies closely, you will notice that one piggy will prefer one vegetable while another piggy will choose another. Just like people really - only more so. In general it is safe to say that most Piggies are inordinately fond of the following items: Grass, greens, corn on the cobs, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, more grass, spinach, celery, carrots, melon, apples, a bit more grass (fresh), parsley, pears, hay, dried ‘ready grass’, alfalfa, grass (even fresher) and even the odd helping of proprietary vitamin C enriched cereals. This is intended as a very rough guide only. Maybe you have discovered your Piggy prefers other interesting food combinations. It is very easy to detect a none preferred item - Mavis screws her nose up! On the whole, Piggies prefer fresh food, attractively arranged in their bowl and sliced into delectably accommodating pieces so they may be carted off to their beds (Piggies DO like bedtime nibbles).
Finally, Piggies have very clearly defined requirements regarding their every day domestic comforts - the softer and cuddlier the better. Essentially, a comfortable bed is mandatory. A divan style, with a raised mattress area is perfect; sheets and eiderdowns constructed from fleece are best - they can be easily washed and dried in preparation for the next comfortable nights sleep. The whole bedroom area is best sited on a good many layers of absorbent newspaper, the reasons for which we won’t enter into here! Warmth should be provided, nasty draughts eliminated and some bedtime stories or soothing music administered to assist with the ‘nodding off’ process. A particular favourite being - ‘The green green grass of home’.
During the daylight hours of Spring and Summer, most Piggies enjoy an invigorating romp on the lawn, provided of course that the weather is climatically suitable - nice and warm and not too moist. They must be made safe and secure in a suitable enclosure that will ensure cats / dogs / or otherwise unwelcome horrid predators are excluded. We also ensure that the run is covered by a net. The run should be positioned with an area out of direct sunlight and with a waterproof section just incase it rains. Extra snacks may be served, and water should be available. In the Autumn and Winter seasons, a heated outdoor shed or kennel is favoured. In here they can have clean hay for burrowing, boxes to play hide and seek, quiet areas for contemplation and, naturally, a snack bar and water bowl. Most Piggies, given the choice, do not appreciate cramped outdoor hutches! Particularly those left open to the elements.
