Mummy - I don’t feel well!

How many times has your little bundle of fury joy looked you in the eye and complained of feeling a little off colour? Often this is due to a particularly over generous helping of salad, or even the prospect of ‘Double Maths’, but occasionally it can be something a bit more serious.

Recently Wilma had been complaining of . . . er, wee wee pains! She was arching her little back, crying and was in obvious discomfort. A trip to the local Vet elicited the usual course of antibiotics and ‘come back in a week if there is no improvement’. There wasn’t - quite the reverse. She lost weight, became even sleepier than usual and her ‘toilet’ problems became even more painful. We were becoming really worried. The Vet took a sample for analysis and studied a specimen for ‘crystals’ (an indication of a possible stone). He found nothing and we were becoming resigned to the inevitable - too horrid even to type.

It was then that we decided to take a trip to The Cambridge Cavy Trust. We have been members of this charity for some years but their distance from our home had prevented us journeying more regularly. Their excellent advice by telephone and email on previous occasion was always very useful.

Immediate diagnosis, aided by a non anaesthetised X-ray, of a gigantic bladder stone was made. The Vet operated the same day. She was well enough to travel home after her operation having woken from the anaesthetic, yawned and begun munching cucumber! All with the minimum of trauma either to Wilma or us!

The Cavy Trust are true experts who are obviously fully in tune with the specialist needs of our beloved Guinea Pigs. The number of other patients we met on the day from all over the country bears testimony to the Trusts special status of a Poorly Piggy’s best possible friend.

If you need advice or the urgent attention of real cavy specialists - give them a try. It might just save a life.

Wilma - on her emergency visit to
The Cambridge Cavy Trust

It is very sad when our piggies are poorly, we feel so helpless.

If you can’t get to the Cavy Trust then you need to go to a local Vet.
