Recently, there was great excitement at The Manufactory when we discovered an ancient rag rug among the artifacts discarded in our outside privvy! It gave us an ideal opportunity to study its method of construction and compare it with our own modern creations.

Rag Rugs were made as early as the mid 1700’s but understandably, few from this period survive. Some excellent examples of original rag rugs are shown in the photograph taken at Normanby Hall museum, top right. Our old rug probably dates from the early 1900’s. It is very worn; the snips of fabric being quite sparsely spaced and the colours drab. Of course, this is consistent with the old clothes of those days which would have been threadbare and limited in both variety and colour. Inspired by our ‘find’ we decided to try and re create the look and feel of these original old rugs.

Our first attempt at a ‘Vintage Replica Rag Rug’ was created using faded clothes made from natural fabrics. Blue, pale green, red and tweed fabrics were cut up and ‘bodged’ into a hessian backing in a very much looser fashion than our contemporary Peg Rugs. The resulting rug is very similar to those of a bygone age. It has a flatter ‘pile’ and is a very much lighter weight rug. It has found pride of place by the Range in the kitchen. Maybe if we trample over it with dusty shoes, in a few years it will come to resemble even more closely our ‘distressed’ rug from the privvy!
